The spoils from the kiln, laid out, each individually inspected but not quite finished yet. The last step is to take a soaked diamond pad and run it over the bases of each pot, removing any specks of sand or grog that protrude from the now fully vitrified clay body beneath.
I could spend more time polishing the bases, the exposed clay, to be much more smooth, but I quite like having some remnants of it, the coarse nature of the clay itself. In contrast to the glassy sheen of the glaze having something rough to feel and compare is important.
Before I tend to the pots though I deal with the kiln. All the props and shelves are removed, the batt-wash that covered the shelves, now flaked in places, is ground away and repainted and everything is prepared so when I next come to pack the kiln, everything is ready.
The most time consuming post firing job for the vessels lies with any of the lidded forms. More often than not some of the wadding that separates the lids from the bodies sticks and requires grinding away, then I smear over thick carborundum laden gel and twist the two components together until glassy smooth. The greasy remains are washed off and the pots are allowed to dry. I tend to do a lot of this post grinding and polishing of bases and lid with some water. It stops what it quite nasty dust from working its way into your lungs and tends to make those areas that require significant clean up much neater.
Then, finally, they’re ready to go.
