A knot in my stomach but a joy in my heart, as I flew across state lines to my new summer home. My nerves built all morning, and then ceased when I stepped foot off the plane. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And every moment after, I felt like Jesus’ little girl. Held closely by Him, delighting in every blessed detail. How could I forget He knew my heart so well? How could I forget how carefully and intentionally Jesus works? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A quiet peace remains. But yesterday as I read this passage, my understanding was flipped on its head: Even in apparent defeat, Christ’s identity could neither be altered nor hidden. Even as he hung in agony—rendered nearly unrecognizable by the grisly torture of His passion—the truth of His identity remained, clearly displayed for all the world to see [whether or not, in fact, they chose to believe]. . And so it is with us, we who are made in God’s image. No suffering or circumstance, however life-altering, can erase or alter our true identity. Even when we feel we’re an unrecognizable form of our former selves, altered irreversibly by the trials of life, His title - “Daughter of God,” “Son of God,” is written on our soul with the ink of truth so indelible it outlasts even death, and claims eternity as its footstool. His identity gives life to ours. And the only possible obstacle is whether or not we ourselves will choose to believe it, and accept this soul-saving Truth. . »» Lord, break open our hearts to embrace the truth of our most authentic and beautiful identity: Yours.
