At the IKEA Democratic Design Days last week, together with @space10_journal we launched the Urban Village Project. Some of the perks? The vision would give access to shared facilities and services that keep you close to what you need on a daily basis. From communal dinners, shared daycare, urban gardening to fitness, groceries, and shared transportation, everything could find room in a modular grid system of sustainably-sourced timber, enabling faster construction and flexibility of use. Today at @ikeatoday 's Democratic Design Days, we're delighted to present to you The Urban Village Project—a vision for how to design, build and share our future homes, cities and neighbourhoods. We've teamed up with @effektarchitects and @norgramstudio to condense those insights into a concrete concept and vision that just might address the challenges we’re facing today. The aim is to allow for cheaper homes to enter the market, make it easier to live sustainably and affordably, and ensure more fulfilling ways of living together. Cities all around the world are facing complex issues like rapid urbanisation, ageing populations, climate change and a lack of natural resources. At the same time, we are in the middle of a global housing crisis. We simply aren’t building enough affordable homes to keep up with the demand. Our cities are becoming increasingly unaffordable, unsustainable and socially unequal. So, we have a problem. On top of this, we face another challenge: people are living closer and are more connected than ever before, but we still feel increasingly lonely, anxious and stressed in our cities. It’s in the intersection of these pressing challenges where we believe The Urban Village Project might offer a solution. We know that around 40 percent of the areas that will need to be urbanised in 2030 do not yet exist; as daunting as the task is, we have a blank canvas to explore how we want the future of our cities to look like and function. #SPACE10 #UrbanVillageProject
