I had the extreme luck of stumbling upon a near-entire pantheon of hand-carved Slavic gods this afternoon. I couldn't choose just one, so I am bringing them all home with me. I haven't felt such a "kid with a new toy" feeling since I was literally a kid with a new toy. Who made these things? And what were they doing in a tourist shop? I love to picture somebody in their apartment in Kostamus, crouching over their wood carving and making the gods real again. I hope the fact that they just sold out encourages them to make more! I got them moments before we crossed the border back into Finland by bus, and it was really hard for my seatmate and I to supress our giggles when the border agent came on the bus to check passports, as we had just been playing with the figures in pure delight. Now I just have to decide if I will give them away in a Fair Folk contest of some kind, or I will simply have to build a temple fit to house them. Do you know of any really good resources on Slavic mythology in English? I want to get to know my little friends a lot better. Also, if you spotted Odin in there, you're right, he's not a Slavic god; my friend found him at the same place and we thought it would be nice to include him in the group photo.

•Semargl• _ In Slavic mythology Semargl is a god of fire and fertility. He's the first son of Svarog ( god blacksmith, the master and creator of many light gods), and has the ability to concentrate and multiply the strength of Yasuni (light gods) guaranteeing victory in the battle. Semargl is one of the elder gods and belongs to the second generation of gods called "sons of gods". Before the birth of Perun, Semargl was the main defender of the rights and he fought the war alongside Perun(or Svarog) against the forces of darkness and chaos. Semargl was also the messenger of the gods who would convey information to the 'Yav' ' world of the living beings, and often appeared to humans as a large winged dog who left a fiery trail after it or as a fire bird Rarog. _ I'm back with some Slavic mythology stuff! I was really excited to work on this drawing since Semargl is one of my favorite characters of the Slavic mythology and drawing him is just so much fun!
