Gordon and Macphail Mortlach 1969 bottled in 1999(?), 40%. • It has the “right” dark cherry colour. • Abundant red fruits as expected, the meatiness is subtle and buried deep in the aroma. Feels way older than 30 years old. • • Oak is taking the reins as we roll onto the palate. More wood varnish and dark chocolate notes, slightly bitter amid of the dark fruits sweetness. For #worldwhiskyday I ended up having a couple of Glendronach samples, the second of which was this Cask 405 for Taiwan. - I’ve heard amazing things about these exclusive single casks and was really excited to try it! - Nose: Quite astringent, a little bit of sulphur, quite hot and spicy, with the signature profile lurking, muted, in the background. - Palette: A spice bomb. Clove, star anise, cinnamon, white and black pepper all assault your senses. One of my favourite distilleries is #Glendronach. So much sherried goodness from their releases! From the core range of the 12, 15, 18 and 21 year old to some of the special releases such as the 1992 25 year for danish retailers also known as the mace windu, you get great value out of these bottles. . However the ones that really got me hooked were the single cask offerings which include the distillery hand-filled bottles, batch releases and cask selections from retailers. Every single cask is different from each other which results in a different tasting experience with each newly opened bottle! Xtra Old Particular (XOP) ”The Black Series” Springbank 1994/2019 25 Year Old Single (Sherry Hogshead) Cask, 47.7% AbV and only 148 bottles . Today’s announcement of a new ultra-premium line of single cask expressions starting with this eye-poppingly priced (£800!) Springbank from Douglas Laing has me wondering if this is a glimpse into the future of independent bottlers. Will every other IB follow with a similar ultra-premium line? . We’ve seen signs that this was coming... the super-premium Director’s Special line from @elixirdistiller, SMWS and its “nicer” dark label line... but this is an IB single cask released at a price higher than what I think Springbank itself would release a 25 year old at. I just paid £325 for a 24 year. Would an extra year, even with a smaller outturn, result in a jump to £800? I doubt it. . Pricing for IBs tends to be all over the place. Many variables that can affect how a price is determined. But to me, this XOP Springbank is a clear creation of an additional tier for IBs. If the quality matches what one would expect of such a high price then so be it? #whiskylates This account is called whiskylates for a reason, albeit a lame one, in that I tend to be late sharing the pictures and events. So if you have been following @londonwhiskyclub @whitstablewhisky and @thewhiskybarrista , I apologise for repeating and echoing their sentiments . That being said, this Feis Ile tasting is probably one of the best we’ve had and one I’d share the hell out in the months to come. . Everyone has raved about the 29.260 A Visceral, Elemental Experience and rightly so. There’s also another star of the show, a 27 year old 23.75 Whisky of a Bygone Era, and what an apt name that is for a rare whisky that is so full of character! ❤️ . We also got to try a bit of the 29.259 and 29.261, and have completed a mini vertical of the 29 Feis Ile outturn, they weren’t as complex and delicious as the 260, but I think the three compliments each other quite well. .
