A roundel of fifteenth-century stained glass depicting St Barbara, from the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg. According to her hagiography, Barbara lived in the time of the emperor Maximian. Her jealous pagan father kept her locked in a high tower (shown here on the left) 'to the end that no man should see her because of her great beauty.' Having secretly converted to Christianity, she rejected the advances of her pagan suitors. One day, when her father returned from business abroad, he discovered the third window she had made in her bathhouse as a symbol of the Trinity. She was brought before a judge and horribly tortured, but refused to renounce her Christian faith. Eventually, she was beheaded by her own father, who was then struck by lightning and burned to ashes.
